Water Competencies and the Importance of Drowning Prevention

Learning to swim is more than mastering swimming strokes. It is about developing essential water competencies, understanding aquatic risks and acquiring survival skills that may save lives.

Water activities are enjoyable and offer numerous physical and mental health benefits. However, swimming pools, beaches, rivers and other aquatic environments can present drowning risks, particularly for individuals who lack water safety knowledge and survival skills.

At Friendly Dolphin Swim School, we believe that swimming education should go beyond learning freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. Developing water confidence, personal survival skills and sound water safety judgement is equally important.

Stay Calm but Act Quickly: Understanding Water Safety Incidents

Drowning prevention involves more than teaching children how to swim. It also requires parents, caregivers and swimming instructors to recognise potential dangers and respond appropriately to aquatic incidents.

During swimming lessons, children may occasionally lose their balance, release their grip on the pool wall, accidentally submerge or swallow a small amount of water.

These experiences can sometimes occur as children develop water confidence and swimming competency. However, it is important to distinguish between manageable learning experiences and situations requiring immediate intervention.

Understand the Difference Between Minor and Serious Incidents

Not every unexpected submersion or loss of balance results in a drowning emergency. Nevertheless, all incidents should be taken seriously and assessed appropriately.

Minor incidents may include briefly losing balance or accidentally swallowing water while remaining alert and breathing normally.

Serious incidents may include an inability to keep the airway above water, persistent breathing difficulties, loss of responsiveness or signs of drowning.

Parents should remain attentive and seek immediate assistance whenever a child’s safety is uncertain.

Follow the Swimming Instructor’s Guidance

Qualified swimming instructors use progressive teaching methods to help students develop water confidence, buoyancy, balance and personal survival skills.

During supervised lessons, instructors may introduce carefully controlled activities that allow students to practise recovering their balance, floating or moving towards the pool wall.

Parents should follow the instructor’s guidance while maintaining awareness of their child’s safety.

Any learning activity must remain appropriate to the student’s ability, with the instructor positioned to provide immediate assistance.

Children should never be left struggling underwater as a learning exercise.

Encourage Learning Through Positive Communication

When children experience minor difficulties, parents can help them understand what happened and how to respond better in the future.

Instead of reacting with anger or panic, parents can communicate calmly, provide reassurance and reinforce appropriate water safety behaviours.

For example, a child who accidentally releases the pool wall can be taught to regain balance, reach for support or signal for assistance.

These conversations improve children’s understanding of water safety and encourage responsible behaviour around aquatic environments.

Move Calmly but Quickly During Emergencies

If a child requires immediate assistance, every second matters.

Parents and caregivers should alert the swimming instructor or lifeguard immediately and use the safest available rescue method.

Avoid creating additional hazards through uncontrolled movements, unnecessary jumping or attempting a rescue beyond your abilities.

Where possible, use appropriate reaching or throwing rescue equipment rather than entering the water without training.

If the child is unresponsive or not breathing normally, activate emergency services and begin CPR according to your training or dispatcher instructions.

The key principle is simple: Remain calm, recognise danger and act immediately when necessary.
