10 Ways to Prevent Sunburn During Swimming Lessons: Benefits of Sunscreen and Sun Protection Tips
Swimming is an enjoyable activity that helps children and adults develop water confidence, physical fitness, and essential swimming skills. However, outdoor swimming lessons also expose swimmers to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
In Singapore’s tropical climate, sun protection is important throughout the year, even when the weather appears cloudy.
Excessive UV exposure can cause sunburn, contribute to premature skin ageing, and increase the risk of skin cancer over time.
Fortunately, swimmers can reduce these risks through appropriate sunscreen application, protective clothing, shade, and sensible swimming schedules.
At Friendly Dolphin Swim School, we encourage parents and swimmers to consider sun protection when preparing for outdoor swimming lessons.
In this article, we explain the benefits of using sunscreen and share ten practical ways to protect your skin during swimming activities.
1. Why Is Sun Protection Important During Swimming?
Sunlight contains ultraviolet radiation, including UVA and UVB rays.
UVA contributes to skin ageing and can also damage skin cells, while UVB is a major cause of sunburn. Both contribute to skin cancer risk.
During outdoor swimming lessons, swimmers may be exposed to UV radiation while:
- Swimming in uncovered pools
- Standing or sitting beside the pool
- Waiting for their swimming lessons
- Practising floating and kicking
- Participating in outdoor water activities
Water does not provide reliable protection from ultraviolet radiation. Swimmers can still receive UV exposure while in the pool, especially near the surface.
Sun protection is therefore important before, during, and after outdoor swimming activities.
