CHOA CHU KANG

Choa Chu Kang, or simply “CCK” to locals, was founded in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as a kampong (Malay for “village”). The Teochew linguistic group, who planted gambier and pepper along the riverbanks, was the area’s first inhabitants, primarily Chinese immigrants.

The name “Choa Chu Kang” is derived from the Teochew word “kang chu,” with “Kang” referring to the riverbank, “chu” referring to the clan name of the first headman, and “Choa” being the clan name of the first headman. Later, Hokkiens settled in the area, developing pineapple, rubber, and coconut plantations and vegetable and poultry farms. Choa Chu Kang was also notable for the wild tigers who roamed freely here until the 1930s when the last of them were slaughtered.

In the 1980s, the area began to be fixed up. The old Chinese kampongs, with their traditional attap houses, plantations, and street vendors, have been cleared out to make way for more modern housing estates. Bus routes and MRT stations have replaced boats and bullock carts.

Like many other planned HDB estates, the area has good public transportation and a lot of community, recreational, commercial, and industrial facilities nearby. In addition, even though there are condo complexes in the area, Choa Chu Kang has more HDB estates, so HDB apartments are easier to find in this neighborhood.
