Introduction to inital water skills

Swimsafer program 2019

The objective at swimsafer stage 1 is gradual development of water confidence and independence in water. Students will have to perform general and deep end water safety. Techniques include forward and backward movement. Safe entry, exit and personal water safety.

Test Criteria

Entries & Exits

1.Slide in Entry

2. Exit using ladder and also pool edge

Sculling & Body Orientation

1.Perform a front float (perform either mushroom, jellyfish or star float) for 5 seconds and recover to a standing position.

2. Perform a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a standing position.

Underwater Skills

Submerge in waist deep water for individual students (0.9 – 1.8 meter pool), open eyes and blow bubbles.

Movement / Swimming / Strokes

1.Movement on front 10 meter distance (alternating arms & legs and/or simultaneous arms and legs.

2.Movement on the back 5 meter (alternating arms & legs and/or simultaneous arms and legs

Survival & Activity Skills

1.Signal Distress

2.Grasp a flotation aid and float for 10 seconds

3.Move to the pool’s edge (with the float)

4.Exit safely from the water

Dressed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt demonstrate:

1.Correctly fit a PFD, jump into the water, float for 30 seconds and them climb out of the deep water.
